이번 포스팅에서는 석사 학생 홍보대사 선발 과정과 합격 후기를 적어보고자 한다. RSM에서는 석사와 프리마스터 과정에 합격한 학생들에게 홍보대사가 될 수 있는 기회를 준다. 학사 과정도 당연히 홍보대사 선발을 하지만 석사&프리마스터 홍보대사와는 별도로 선발하기 때문에 그 부분은 넘기고 내가 합격한 석사&프리마스터 홍보대사 얘기만 하겠다.
사실 나는 따로 홍보대사 지원을 안 해도 자원 홍보대사로 일을 할 수도 있다. 왜냐면 장학금을 받았기 때문이다. 장학금 수혜자들은 그 대가로 자원 홍보대사로 일을 할 수 있다. 단, '자원'이기 때문에 원치 않으면 하지 않아도 되고 만약 하겠다고 결정할 경우에도 일반 홍보대사보다는 일을 덜 하고 그에 대한 별도의 수익이 발생하지 않는다. 하지만 일반 홍보대사로 지원을 해 합격을 하고 최종 컨펌까지 한 후에는 무조건 활동을 해야 하고, 대신 네덜란드 최저시급으로의 수익이 발생한다.
나는 수익도 수익이지만 이왕 해외에서 대학생활하는 김에 할 수 있는 한 많고 다양한 활동을 해보고 싶어서 솔직히 두려웠지만 지원을 했다. 지원 과정은 간단했다. 지원 시기가 다와가면 학교에서 메일이 온다. 그럼 그 메일에서 알려주는 지원 시기 동안 지원 페이지에 접속을 해 3가지 면접 질문에 답변을 하고 10여 가지의 지원자 개인 정보와 관련된 매우 단순한 질문에 대한 답을 적고 제출을 하면 지원 시기가 끝나고 약 2주 후에 결과 메일이 온다.
일단 3가지 면접 질문은 다음과 같았다.
1. 지원 동기
2. 홍보대사로서 지원자의 특별한 점 (남들과는 차별되는 점)
3. 홍보대사 업무와 관련된 과거 경험
지원 페이지에서 해당 질문에 대해 내가 답변하는 모습을 영상으로 자동 녹화를 하고 저장한다. 즉, 실시간 면접이 아니라 내가 원하는 시간에 편안한 곳에서 녹화 면접을 볼 수 있는 것이다. 게다가 면접 질문이 본격적인 면접을 시작하기 전 면접 과정 설명 단계에서 공개되기 때문에 충분히 답변을 준비하고 혹은 미리 스크립트를 짜서 외우고 면접을 시작할 수 있어서 평소 완벽주의와 긴장도가 높은 나에게 있어서는 나름 덜 떨면서 할 수 있는 면접이었다.
녹화 면접이 다 끝난 후 개인 정보 질문은 아주 간단했다. 몇 가지 기억나는 내용을 적어보자면, 학번, 출신 국가, 석사 학위 프로그램명, 학사 학위명, 사용 가능한 언어 등이었다. 단답형으로 쉽게 대답할 수 있는 내용들이었고, 이 질문들은 면접 형태가 아니라 그냥 답변을 타이핑해서 적으면 되는 것들이었다.
올해는 지원 시기가 6월 중순~말쯤부터 7월 31일까지였다. 나는 6월 30일에 지원을 완료했고, 너무 오래돼서 솔직히 까먹고 있다가 친구랑 배 타러 갔다가 배 위에서 합격 메일을 받게 된 것이다. 기뻤지만 한편으론 오직 영어로만 홍보 활동을 해야 하는 직무이기 때문에 내가 잘 할 수 있을까 걱정도 많이 됐다. (영어를 완벽히 구사하지 못하면 홍보대사로서 체면을 구기는 기분이 들 것 같기 때문이다.)
암튼 합격 메일에는 홍보대사로서 해야 하는 업무들이 나열되어 있었고 내용을 자세히 읽어본 후 정말로 활동을 할 것인지 컨펌 답신을 보내면 최종 합격이다. 그리고 그 컨펌 메일에는 Unibuddy라는 앱에 업로드할 홍보대사로서의 내 소개글을 최대 150 단어로 작성하여 같이 보내면 되었다. (Unibuddy는 특정 대학에 관심이 있는 학생들이 재학 중인 학생들에게 각종 질문을 하고 컨텍 및 소통할 수 있는 앱이다.)
이렇게 해서 꽤 간단한 홍보대사 선발 과정이 끝났고, 난 내 학위 과정의 홍보대사 중 한 명으로 선정되었다. 과연 내가 이 일을 잘 할 수 있을지는 모르겠지만, 최선을 다해봐야 할 것 같다. 메일에 의하면 홍보대사로서의 첫 일정은 9월 6일 사진 촬영인데, 홍보대사 일정도 하나씩 여기 블로그에 포스팅해보도록 하겠다. 그리고 이 파트타임 일을 하게 되면서 9월부터는 보험도 인터네셔널 학생 보험이 아니라 네덜란드 건강 보험을 들어야 하는데, 그와 관련된 내용도 공유하도록 하겠다.
In this post, I'm going to write about the application and selection procedure for an RSM student ambassador. At RSM, you can have an opportunity to become a student ambassador if you are accepted to master and premaster programs. Of course, bachelor students can also apply for the ambassador position, but it's a different position to the master's and premaster one, so I'm only going to talk about the latter one.
To be honest, I can still work as an ambassador even if I didn't applied for the position because I'm an awardee of a scholarship by the university. However, then, it's an voluntary ambassador, so it's not mandatory to do ambassador tasks, and even if I decide to do them, I'll work less than other student ambassadors and there will be no income from working as a voluntary one. But, when I apply for the student ambassador position, get selected as one, and confirm my participation in the ambassador program, it's obligatory to complete the tasks and I'll be compensated for the working time at the Dutch minimum wage.
I applied for the position not only because I can get paid but also because I wanted to join as various activities as possible during the study abroad period. The application procedure is simple. The university sends students an email regarding the student ambassador in June. During the application period, anyone who wants to apply for the position access the application webpage, and answer three oral questions and 10-ish short written questions. The written questions are about applicants' personal information, so they're very simple to answer. Applicants can get the result about 2 weeks after the application period is over.
The three oral interview questions were as follows:
1. reason for application
2. your unique selling point as an ambassador (what maeks you special as an ambassador)
3. past experiences related to the ambassador tasks
The application webpage does voice and video recording of me answering those questions. That is, it's not a real-time interview but an interview that I can participate in whenever and wherever I'm comfortable. Moreover, the interview questions are shown on the introduction page before the interview recording starts, so you can take enough time to prepare the answers or even write the answers in advance and memorize them before the interview. It was such a nice way for me to join the interview because I'm a perfectionist and I easily become very nervous.
The personal information questions were very easy to answer. To write down some of the topics of the questions that I currently remember, they were about my student number, nationality, the name of the master's program, the name of my bachelor's degree, languages that I can speak, etc. All of them were what I could easily answer, and I didn't need to orally answer them but just type the corresponding answers.
This year's application period was from mid/late June to the 31st of July. I completed the application on the 30th of June, and I actually forgot the fact that I applied for the ambassador position, and then I got the selection result email when I was on the boat with my friend. I was happy, but at the same time, I was so concerned because I have to follow all the ambassador program tasks only in English. (I feel like I'm embarrassing myself when I don't speak perfect English.)
Anyway, the ambassador tasks were written on the result email, and I had to reply with the confirmation after reading all of them carefully. And on the confirmation email, I had to include a maximum of 150 words of the introduction description to add to my ambassador Unibuddy bio as well. (Unibuddy is an app where prospective students can contact and communicate with some of the current students at a certain university.)
So, the easy-peasy ambassador application procedure has been over, and now I've been selected as one of the student ambassadors of the BIM master program. To be honest, I'm not sure if I will be able to complete all the tasks well, so I guess I should try my best. According to the email, my first schedule as an ambassador is the photoshoot on the 6th of September, so I'll write about each task in the following posts from then. And since this position is a part-time job, I have to change my insurance from the international student one to the Dutch health care one. So, I think it'll be really helpful if I share the information regarding that as well.
