[3] RSM 학생으로서 집 구하기 - 1 | Housing as a RSM first-year student - 1 (Why I decided to rent a room at Xior)

사실 집 구한지는 시간이 꽤 흘렀다. 단지 이것저것 하느라 바빠서 블로그에 글 쓸 생각을 못 했다.. 오늘 마침 생각난 김에 집 구하는 과정은 어땠는지에 대한 글을 한 번 써보려고 한다.

 

우선 RSM 학생으로서 집을 구하는 방법은 정말로 아주 다양하다. 네덜란드는 기숙사의 개념이 없고 학교가 학생들의 거주지 마련에 책임이 있는 것이 아니기 때문에 학생들이 알아서 구해야 한다. 몇 가지 대표적인 집 구하는 방법을 나열해보자면 다음과 같다.

- 학교 홈페이지에 소개되어있는 학생 숙소 및 아파트: SSH, Xior, The Student Hotel 등

- 방 구하는 웹사이트: kamernet.nl, pararius.com 등

- 부동산

- 페이스북 페이지: 페이스북에 rotterdam housing, student housing in rotterdam 등 검색

- 인맥 (지인을 통해서)

이 중에서 나는 학교 홈페이지에 소개되어있는 Xior이라는 학생 아파트에서 방을 하나 구했다.

 

Xior에서 방을 구하기로 결정한 이유는 다음과 같다.

1. 스튜디오룸

2. 주거 보조금 가능성

3. 캠퍼스 내 위치

 

각각의 이유를 좀 더 자세히 설명해보자면, 일단 난 방의 형태가 거의 우선순위 1위였다. 방 형태는 가장 크게 두 가지의 형태가 있는데, 하나는 스튜디오룸이고 다른 하나는 쉐어드룸이다. 스튜디오룸의 경우 원룸 형태이기 때문에 나만의 부엌 및 침실 공간과 화장실이 마련되어 있다. 반면, 쉐어드룸의 경우 쉐어하우스의 형태이기 때문에 보통 침실만 각자 쓰고 부엌, 화장실, 거실 등은 플랫 및 하우스 메이트들과 공유한다. 물론 두 형태 다 장단점이 존재한다. 대표적으로는, 스튜디오룸에서 거주하면 상대적으로 프라이버시가 보장되고 부엌과 화장실 모두 나만의 공간이기 때문에 자유롭게 사용할 수 있다는 장점이 있지만, 다른 사람들과의 교류가 상대적으로 쉽지 않고 월세가 비싸다는 단점이 있다. 쉐어드룸은 반대로 생각하면 된다. 장점으로는 다른 사람들과 일부 공간을 공유하면서 같이 저녁을 먹거나 가족과 같은 친구들을 사귈 수 있고 월세가 저렴하다는 점이 있지만, 단점으로는 그러다보니 개인 시간 확보가 비교적 어려울 수 있고 프라이버시 보장이 어려울 수 있다는 점을 꼽을 수 있다.

 

나는 내향적인 성향을 가진 사람으로서 하루 중 너무 많은 시간을 다른 사람들과 소통하거나 생활하다보면 피로함을 쉽게 느끼는 편이다. 물론 그 사람들이 싫어서가 절대 아니라 그냥 내 안의 에너지가 바닥나는 느낌이 든다. 그리고 운 좋게 나와 잘 맞는 플랫메이트를 만나면 그보다 더 좋을 수 없지만, 그렇지 않다면 1년 내내 공부 및 학교 생활 외의 것들로 스트레스를 받기 쉽다. 그래서 그냥 그럴 걱정할 필요 없는 스튜디오룸을 강력히 선호했다.

 

그리고 Xior에서 제공하는 방의 경우 주거 보조금을 받을 가능성이 있다. (가능성이라고 하는 이유는 아직 해당 보조금 신청을 안 해봤기 때문에 정말로 가능할지는 100% 확신하지 못하기 때문이다.) 네덜란드에 합법적으로 거주하는 모든 사람들은 주거 보조금을 신청할 수 있다. 신청한다고 다 받을 수 있는 것은 아니고 기준이 있다.

- 나이: 만 18세 이상

- 은행 잔고: (혼자 사는 경우) 30,846 유로 이하

- 월세: (만 18-22세) 432.51 유로 이하 / (만 23세 이상) 737.14 유로 이하

(여기서 월세는 기본 월세에 아파트 공용 공간을 위한 서비스비용만 더한 금액이다. 인터넷비용, 에너지비용 등은 제외된다.)

만약 보조금 못 받으면 월세가 너무 너무 비싸서 무조건 받아야 한다ㅠㅠ

마지막으로, 위치가 상당히 마음에 든다. 물론 시티센터와 꽤 떨어져 있다는 단점이 있지만, 캠퍼스 내라는 엄청난 장점이 있다. 나는 학생으로서 학교에서 가장 많은 시간을 보내게 될 것이기 때문에 최대한 학교와 가까운 곳에 집을 구하는 것이 아주 중요했다. 구글 맵으로 확인해보니 경영대 건물과 걸어서 5분도 채 안 걸리는 위치이고, 인근 슈퍼마켓들도 걸어서 5분 거리에 있었다. 그리고 캠퍼스 내에 카페와 각종 음식 테이크아웃점들, 그리고 헬스장도 있어서 왠만해선 캠퍼스를 크게 벗어날 이유도 없어 보였다. (물론 헬스장은 현재 학교 헬스장 말고 Basic-Fit이라는 사설 헬스장을 생각 중인데, 여기도 자전거로 약 7분 거리이기 때문에 그렇게 멀지 않다. 근데 학교 헬스장도 올 8월에 리뉴얼 오픈이 예정되어 있는 만큼 충분히 좋은 시설을 갖추고 있다. 헬스장에 관한 더 많은 글은 실제로 헬스장 등록 후 더 포스팅해보도록 하겠다.)

그리고 네덜란드에선 왠만하면 자전거로 이동할 것 같지만, 트램 정류장도 Xior 건물 바로 앞에 있어서 대중교통 이용 시에도 아주 편리할 것 같아 보였다.

 

원래는 하나의 포스트에 방과 관련된 내용을 다 담아보려고 했는데, 쓰다보니 길이 상당히 길어져서 해당 글을 두 부분으로 나누겠다. 다음 포스트에서는 Xior 방 신청이 열렸던 날짜와 어떤 과정을 거쳐 방을 신청할 수 있었는지에 대해 적어보겠다. 미리 살짝만 얘기하자면 그 날 엄청 울면서 방 신청을 했다..😂 조만간 올려볼테니 많이 기대 바란다.

I actually found a place to live in Rotterdam quite a while ago. I was just pretty busy doing other stuffs, and I literally forgot to write an article about it here. And finally today that came into my mind, so I'm going to tell you how the housing went.

 

First of all, there are various ways to find a room as a RSM student. There is no concept regarding 'dormitory' in the Netherlands, and thus, housing isn't guaranteed by most of the unversities. It's totally a student's responsibility. To name some well-known ways to get a room as a student at RSM(or EUR), they're as follows:

- Student housing/apartments introduced by the university website: SSH, Xior, The Student Hotel, etc.

- Other websites to look for housing: kamernet.nl, pararius.com, etc.

- Real agency

- Facebook pages: search keywords such as 'rotterdam housing', ' student housing in rotterdam', etc. on FB

- asking friends whether there are any people who they know and are looking for (student) tanents

And among these options, I got a room at Xior.

 

There are three main reasons why I decided to get a room at Xior.

1. studio-type room

2. possibility to receive a housing subsidy

3. located on campus

 

My first priority when looking for housing is a type of a room. There are two major kinds of rooms: studio-type rooms and rooms in shared-flats/houses. A studio-type room has its own kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom. On the other hand, in shared-flats or houses, people have their own bedrooms, but they usually share living room, kitchen, and bathroom. Of course, there are pros and cons in the both types of rooms. Some examples of them are as follows:

 

1) Studio-type

- pros: more privacy, can use all the areas in a room freely

- cons: harder to meet family-like people, higher rent

 

2) Shared flat/house

- pros: meet family-like people, lower rent

- cons: harder to have enough time just for myself, less privacy

 

Being an introvert easily makes me feel tiredness when I spend too much time with others. Of course, it's not about that I don't like them, but I just feel like I run out of my energy pretty fast when I'm with others. Also, if I luckily have flatmates who I have similar living patterns and habits with me, it can't be better, but otherwise, it's so easy to get stressed due to the stuffs outside studying and student life. Therefore, I strongly preferred a studio-type room where I don't need to worry about that.

 

And there is a possibility to get a housing subsidy if I rent a room at Xior. (The reason I say 'possiblility' is because I haven't applied for the subsidy yet, so I'm not 100% sure if I'm eligible.) Anyone who lives in the Netherlands legally can apply for the subsidy. Of course, there are some criteria to receive it.

- Minimum age: 18

- Maximum assets: (if you live alone) €30.846

- Maximum rent: (age 18-22) €432,51 / (age 23 and older) €737,14

(The 'rent' only includes basic rent and service fees as far as I know. It excludes other fees such as internet, water, electricity, heating, etc.)

And I really have to get the subsidy since the rent is too high..

Lastly, I really like the location of Xior. Although it is quite far away from the city center(20 mins by bike), but there is a huge advantage that it's on campus. I, as a student, will spend most of the time at university, so I thought it's really important to find a room as close to the university as possible. According to Google Maps, it only takes 3-4 minutes to the RSM building by foot, and the nearest supermarkets are just 5 minutes away from the student accommodation. And it doesn't really seem like it's frequently necessary to go outside of the campus since there are cafes, various takeaway food places, and a gym on campus. (To be honest, I've been currently thinking of registering at Basic-Fit, which is also not that far (7 mins by bike), not a gym on campus, but it doesn't mean that the gym at the university lacks something. Students who are already there say that the university gym is good enough to work out, and actually it's really awesome to work out there since they provide not only fitness facilities but also tons of group sport classes. I'll just write more with the gym and work out topic when I'm actually there.)

And though I think I'll mostly use a bike to move here to there, but just in case I need a public transportation, there's a tram station right in front of Xior, so it also seems super convenient.

 

I actually planned to upload one post about the housing topic, but since it became too long, I think I'll just divide it into two parts. So, in the next post, I'm going to when the room application of Xior was open and the process of it. To say about it in short in advance, I literally cried so hard while applying for a room lol
